Two old people eating

Two old people eating

The exact location of Two old people eating in Goya's house is uncertain. Because of its size (50cm high, 80cm wide) most experts assume it was painted above one of the doors. Whether it was upstairs or downstairs is unclear.

What exactly is depicted is also entirely unclear. The painting has been called Two old people eating, Two witches, Two old women eating, Two old men eating, and several other titles. Whether the two people were meant to be male or female, witches or just aged people, we will probably never know. What we can see is two old people, one of them eating, the other apparently browsing through some papers or books. An everyday scene, yet Goya made it into a disturbing, scary picture.
