Two friars
We do not know if the two men on The two friars are indeed friars - the title of the painting dates from well after Goya's death. The painting is also known as An old man and a monk, or Two old men.
Noticeable is the contrast between the two men: One is an old, bearded, dignified man, the other deformed, almost beastly, without a trace of dignity. It has been suggested that the old man may have been Goya himself, perhaps listening to the call of death?
